7 Causes of Hip Pain

Causes of Hip Pain

Causes of Hip Pain
Hip pain can affect young and old alike. The reasons for the pain vary, and the kind of pain experienced and the part where it is felt can give valuable pointers as to the cause of the pain. Below are listed a few of the common causes of hip pain.

1. Sports Hernia

•  Also known as athletic pubalgia, this condition causes pain in the groin area.

• Sports like rugby which involve sudden jerking movements might result in it.

• In this condition, the muscles, tendons, or other soft tissues near the groin are injured. Diagnosis involves a physical examination and x-ray or MRI.

• An abdominal hernia may be caused by this condition and hence the name.

• The doctor will first try conservative methods of treatment.

• If that does not yield results, surgery is a possible option.

2. Bursitis

• The joints in our body are cushioned by fluid-filled sacs called bursae.

• When these sacs are inflamed, the condition is called bursitis.

• When we indulge repeatedly in activities that strain the hip joint, bursitis may develop. Being overweight is another risk factor for this condition.

• In addition to hip pain, patients may develop a fever.

• Prevention includes practicing the right technique to lift heavy objects, staying physically active, and controlling weight.

3. Labral Tear

• The labrum is a cartilage that lines the socket joint of the hip.

• The labrum not only cushions the joint but also stabilizes it.

• A hip labral tear manifests as groin pain, along with a feeling of rigidity in the hip, and patients might feel their hips locking or catching.

• Road traffic accidents, contact sports, and structural abnormalities can result in a labral tear. Doing strengthening exercises is a good prevention technique.

4. Tendonitis

• Tendons attach muscles to bones.

• The iliopsoas muscle in the hip is connected to the upper part of the thigh by a tendon. When this tendon is injured, hip tendonitis results.

• High-impact sports may cause this condition.

• The pain typically starts slowly, with more pain being felt in front of the hip.

• Untreated, it can limit the range of movement of the hip.

• Treatment options vary from RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) to physiotherapy and surgery.

5. Hip Impingement

• The hip joint is a ball and socket joint, and when the ball and socket rub against each other and do not have smooth movement, it is called hip impingement.

• Thigh pain and groin pain are the symptoms.

• This condition is usually experienced by people who have a structural defect in either the ball head of the femur or the socket from birth.

• Performing exercises that involve twisting and squatting may also cause it.

• Surgical and non-surgical treatment options are available.

6. Osteoarthritis

• As people become old, the cartilage that protects the bones and facilitates friction-free movement wears away.

• Hip pain, tenderness, swelling, and limited hip movement are the symptoms of osteoarthritis. High-impact sports and obesity may worsen the condition.

• Treatment options range from pain medication and steroids to surgical options like hip replacements.

7. Other Possible Causes

• Pelvis: Hip pain felt only during periods or ovulation could be possibly due to fibroids and not a hip condition at all.

• Sometimes, kidney and urological problems can also cause hip/groin pain.
